Buffalo State Foundation Partners with Athletics on Golf Classic
The Buffalo State Foundation has embarked on a new chapter of collaboration with other campus events to generate critical funds for student scholarships and financial aid, as well as enhance the Buffalo State experience.
The Foundation’s first collaborative effort was its 28th Annual Buffalo State Foundation Golf Tournament, which, in 2025, was held in partnership with Buffalo State Athletics’ 42nd Annual Bengal Club Golf Classic.
Scholarship Tea Held at LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center
The Buffalo Federation of Women’s Clubs hosted its annual Scholarship Tea in Costello Hall at the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center in November. This cherished tradition celebrates the generosity of donors and honors outstanding student scholarship recipients from Buffalo State University and the University at Buffalo (UB).
The Buffalo Federation of Women’s Clubs hosts this annual event to raise funds and honor current students who have received the awards. The Club sponsors scholarships at both institutions that recognize and encourage academic excellence and community engagement. Buffalo State and UB alternate years hosting the event.
Buffalo State Selected for Gates Foundation Initiative
Buffalo State was selected to participate in a new Gates Foundation initiative designed to better prepare future mathematics teachers for the classroom. The project aims to improve curriculum literacy in elementary mathematics by exposing teacher candidates to High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM), which are used by Buffalo Public Schools (BPS), as well as numerous districts nationwide.
As part of the Gates Foundation’s initiative prioritizing new teachers, the foundation is partnering with Education First and the New Teacher Project (TNTP), which is connected with Buffalo Public Schools’ Urban Teaching Fellow Program. Susan McMillen, professor of mathematics, and Jodelle Magner, associate professor of mathematics, have both worked closely with BPS’ mathematics department for many years, which made Buffalo State a natural choice for collaboration for BPS mathematics director JaDawn Wagstaff.
While the university is one of just five sites across the country implementing the project, it is the only one implementing this work into its fall content courses, not just methods classes.
As HQIM is used nationwide, Magner and McMillen pointed out that Buffalo State students who experience it will have a job market advantage.
