Athletics Celebrates Inaugural Benji Awards

Buffalo State Athletics held its first Benji Awards on April 30 in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall to celebrate outstanding team and individual accomplishments of the 2016–2017 season. The revamped version of the annual Buffalo State Athletics Banquet is a theater-style awards show akin to the ESPY Awards. In addition to paying tribute to the 59 seniors in the Class of 2017, Buffalo State recognized Mike Brown from Campus Services with the Golden Bengal Service Award. “Benjis” were handed out to top honorees, including swimmer Connor Mergler and soccer player Melissa Smith, who were named Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively. Hockey player Mike DeLaVergne won the Hube Coyer Award, and Smith won the Ruth Houston Award for outstanding careers by a male and female athlete, respectively.
